Description

Light Sea Blue is a desaturated blue-gray tone developed by the U.S. Navy for aircraft and ship camouflage during World War II. It served as the upper surface color in various air wing schemes, especially in 1943–44 tri-color applications. This hue blended with oceanic and sky backgrounds, offering concealment for naval aircraft during carrier operations in the Pacific Theater.

Light Sea Blue is included in:
Item #29384 Railroad Model Color Paint Set

Item #29433 Basic Acrylic Painting Set with Brushes, Mediums & Empty Bottles, 89-Piece

Historical Use

  • Aircraft Camouflage: Applied to the top surfaces of U.S. Navy and Marine aircraft during WWII, particularly:
    • SBD Dauntless dive bombers
    • F4F Wildcat and FM-2 fighters
    • TBF Avenger torpedo bombers
  • Tri-Color Scheme: Part of the 1943 camouflage directive combining:
    • Non-Specular Light Gray (underside)
    • Intermediate Blue (mid-surfaces)
    • Light Sea Blue (upper surfaces)
  • Fading & Wear: Light Sea Blue often faded quickly in Pacific sun and salt spray, making weathering a key modeling detail.

Modeling Uses

  • WWII U.S. Navy aircraft: Accurate topcoat for carrier-based planes
  • Naval vessel decks and control towers in late-war configurations
  • Post-war planes: Appeared in transitional schemes before overall gloss sea blue adoption
  • Highlight for cooler metal surfaces: machinery, naval containers, and sonar domes

Color Characteristics

  • Muted blue-gray tone
  • More vibrant than Intermediate Blue but lighter and less saturated than Sea Blue
  • Close to ANA 608 or FS 35189 in modern Federal Standard references

Pairing Suggestions

  • Non-Specular Light Gray (undersides)
  • Intermediate Blue (mid-fuselage transitions)
  • Engine Black or Reefer Gray for panel accents and engine parts

James H. ★★★★★

Finally, a hobby paint that actually looks like the faded ocean gray of old Navy photos instead of straight blue. The 20ml bottle is plenty for a 1/48 Wildcat, and the consistency sprays well right out of the bottle.

Sofia C. ★★★★★

Brushed this over the upper surfaces of a 1/48 Wildcat and the bluish-gray tone looks spot on next to my reference photos. It thins smoothly with just a little water and didn't clog my airbrush at 20 psi.

Olivia ★★★★☆

The bluish-gray tone is spot on for a Dauntless, and 20ml was plenty for the upper surfaces. Only gripe is it needed three thin coats to fully cover the gray primer underneath.
